Question to candidates regarding proposed Streetcar

To Mayoral and City Council Candidates
Ladies and Gentlemen:

Tempe has a myriad issues and obstacles to overcome given the economy and everything else going on. My question to you is how you feel about the viability of the “Modern Streetcar”? I do not know of a more worthless project in the current environment — or any environment, for that matter — and I will support any candidate that has a meaningful opposition strategy. Your thoughts?

  1. Cassie,

Great question! While I wouldn’t call the modern streetcar a “worthless project” I do not support it under its current alignment at its current cost. In fact, I have written a fairly in-depth paper explaining why I think the current plan is flawed. You can read it here.

I believe you will find I am the only candidate who has taken this stance on this issue.

  2. Hi Cassie,

Thank you for your question. The Arizona Republic asked a similar question of all of the mayoral and council candidates. If you go to and search for the Tempe mayorial and council candidates questionnaire you will find all of the answers you are looking for. I do not support the street car if it involves taxing the citizens to do it.

    Kindest Regards.

  3. My apologies for the delay in getting back on this important question. Proposition 400 has taxed Tempe residents since 2005 to build, operate and maintain a modern streetcar and the routes were set by voters. To throw a monkey wrench into this project now would cost Tempe taxpayers 130 million dollars! That in itself would be a serious loss for Tempe. All of Tempe’s taxpayers money would go to the N. 19 th Avenue extension of the light rail, or Phase 3. This discussion needs to be about reality and not about whether or not the money will be expended. The money will be expended as voter directed. There are no rebates and even more importantly, the money has already been collected! There is no tax increase proposed. The question is, will your council candidate play politics or be a good manager of your precious tax dollars and ensure they are kept right here in Tempe? I will keep your tax dollars invested in Tempe. That’s the real issue.
